Well I am due to fly off to Malta on Saturday and today all airports came to a grinding halt amid total chaos because of an alleged plot to hi-jack planes on long haul flights to the USA and blow them up mid-air. If this is true, it is utterly horrific and the mind just cannot take in the appalling carnage that would have ensued. Daughter No 1 got a bit panicky about it all but after chatting and checking the news throughout the day I think we will get off OK, albeit a bit delayed.
One thing that puzzles me slightly and I am aware that in the middle of all this, there should be no time for frivol, but amongst the few things we are allowed to take on board there are no books permitted. Why? Apparently, after clearing the security checks you are then free to wander into Books etc and buy one, but will be checked again before you embark, and may have to discard your purchase. The only book I would be more than happy to have taken off me is the Da Vinci Code, but not sure even that would make me buy it. Security is a funny thing, I once had a pair of nail clippers that I had forgotten about but once through in the departure lounge, went into Boots and bought another pair!
I am aware however, that I should not be flippant about all this and as I am only on a 2 hour flight will have to manage without a book. Heaven knows what I would do if I was flying to Australia....
