Such a gorgeous sunny day yesterday that I decided to pay a visit to Cambridge. Called a friend to see if she wanted to come, O yes please, so off we went. No reason for visiting, no plan, but just to enjoy being there which is never difficult when wandering around the colleges or visiting King's College Chapel. After a bit of shopping (and yes this included bookshops, but I was very good, only came away with one book, an out of print Noel Streatfield - one of her 'adult' novels) Josephine and I decided to find a restaurant by the river where we had had a lovely lunch in the summer.
As neither of us could remember what it was called or where it was this posed a difficulty. On pooling our little grey cells we had a hazy recollection that it was near water and on the way to Kettle's Yard, so we headed in that direction and within ten minutes, to our utter surprise, managed to locate it. Its name is Galleria and overlooks the Backs so if you can get a table on its minuscule balconies, you have the pleasure of watching assorted punts go by and derive much amusement from the competence of lack of displayed by their inhabitants.
From our safe viewpoint diners called out encouragement to hapless punters involved in the Cam equivalent of Piccadilly Circus trying to navigate their way out of trouble, made appreciative comments on those very fit young men punting the boats sans-shirts, and lobbed bread to the ducks and swans who made suicidal forays in between all the boat mayhem to gobble up the food.
All very entertaining, good fun had by all and the food is excellent and not overly expensive. We sat there for over two hours with the lovely feeling that we had no timetable, nowhere to go that we did not want to go to, and we could do precisely what we wanted.
Cambridge, good fun and the sun shining. What more could one ask for?
