This afternoon I was visiting the Fidra Books website and also reading their blog. I was delighted to see that they will be reprinting Fly by Night by Katherine Peyton in 2007 and it is going on my list of Books to Be Bought as Soon as Possible as I loved this book when I was a little girl. I also remember books by the same author on the early days of flying, I think there were three of those but my memory is a bit fuzzy on this point. I daresay another blogger will put me right!
When I arrived home, by that serendipity which I constantly refer to, it was to find the latest Fidra Books catalogue on my doormat with a black and white illustration of the Peyton book on the front cover. I remembered the wonderful Victor Ambrus drawings in this book and others in the Oxford series that he illustrated - instant nostalgia hit me
Then I turned to Page 14 and lo and behold, more serendipity (I shall have to find another word you know, I use this one far too often), an article on The Haunted Bookshop by its owner Sarah Key. I visit this bookshop each time I go to Cambridge and never come out empty handed. I first came across Sarah's wonderful collection of books when I attended a book fair at Long Melford in Suffolk, and found some first edition Elizabeth Goudge children's books on her shelves, and have bought books from her ever since.
Earlier in this blog I posted about a visit to Cambridge with an accompanying photo of the aforementioned bookshop and I post it here again. It is a lovely bookshop, everything piled up and double stacking and you can rummage around and find wonderful things. Do visit. It is just off the market square near King's Parade.
And do visit Fidra Books, it is a wonderful publishing company and such lovely, lovely, nostalgic, enchanting books.
