I discovered I did not have a copy on my shelves of Elizabeth von Arnim's masterpiece Vera. I used to have a copy but suddenly realised I had not seen it for a while so after ransacking all my books came to the conclusion it had vanished, heaven knows where.
Now regular readers of this blog will know that | love the old Virago green editions so I was rather sad to lose Vera as it had one of those wonderful covers. Still, I noticed that Virago had brought out an edition this year with an old 'green' type cover and so, while I will keep an eye out for the earlier one, decided to order this in the meantime as thought the cover was rather lovely.
When I found it on Amazon I thought what a stupid thing to do putting a yellow sticker on the front cover like that, no matter, I will peel it off when it arrives. Well, it arrived and guess what? The sticker is part of the cover, it is not removable, it is there for ever more. Do you think this is as daft and as irritating as I do or should I just keep quiet and get a life?
There seems to be no logic about the current Virago reissues - some of them retain the 'old' covers, some do not. Now this one comes along. Did nobody in the office have the nous to say how pointless this was?
