Earlier this year I saw Bryn Terfel sing this role in the superb Sondheim musical (though I hesitate to call it that as it really is a hybrid of a piece) and he was quite chilling and magnificent. Wonderful though this performance was it lacked one thing. Alan Rickman. I knew then that a film was being made of Sweeney and remembered thinking that the only person who could play the judge was the glorious Alan in a part that would fit him like the proverbial glove. In my mind if a film was going to be made then it simply HAD to have Mr R in the cast list. As the only person who could play Severus Snape was Alan so the judge. I was therefore ecstatic to see his name appear in the cast list as was I at the idea of Johnny Depp playing Sweeney. He certainly can't sing like Bryn, but then Bryn doesn't look like this!
Word on the street is encouraging so cannot wait to go see.
