Susan Hill seems to thoroughly enjoy writing ghost stories and I would think there are very few people around who have not heard of the Woman in Black. Not only is it a seriously scary book, but it has been running in the theatre for many years and now we have a new film version being made with Daniel Radcliffe starring, post Harry Potter. I am not sure I will be able to nerve myself to see it quite frankly as reading the book scared me witless as you can see from my earlier post here. I was so jumpy after finishing it that I wouldn't get out of bed and go to the loo and had to lie and suffer till the morning. I was worried if I did get out of bed something horrible would come out from underneath and grab me. Yes I know....
Then I read Mist in the Mirror which I found just as scary and my review is here. What amazes me about the protagonists in these books is their stupidity. Nothing would have made me visit the lonely house in The Woman in Black let alone stay there overnight. In the Mist in the Mirror our hero not only goes into a library at dead of night but also decides to explore a creepy chapel, also at night. Why not just stay in bed for heaven's sake? But then if they stayed safely tucked under the duvet we would not have a story.
Another one by Susan HIll I can recommend is The Man in the Picture which I read and enjoyed but do not seem to have reviewed so check out the comments on Amazon.
She also has a new ghost story The Small Hand, just published and I am saving this up for next weekend.
More creepies later on in the week.
