I was just about able to see why he was chucking out the various paperbacks by what I believe are termed "popular novelists", since most people would not buy such things in the first place and would not, therefore, normally have any compunction about being rid of them. But in time we moved on to things that had some merit. Even for him the decision was occasionally difficult, and he has the discernment not to ditch serious works of reference or great works of literature. But, inevitably, there were some borderline decisions to be made, and these, even for him, were a little contentious.
After the Telegraph's daft headline of the other day 'Jane Austen can't write' here is one that I totaly empathise with...
