I have just got back from London where I had a lovely time meeting up with friends, one of whom was Julie. She and I have been on the same on-line book group for several years now and when we have a chance we meet up to have a chat and gossip. She is another Mills & Boon lover and she brought me a batch of old copies she had picked up on charity shops - one was published in 1961, cost 2.6d and had the amazing title of Doctor in Bondage. Not as exciting as it seems I can assure you but huge fun.
A young man was sitting at a table very close to us and it was clear that he was listening into our coversation. He could hardly fail to hear us actually, we are not exactly quiet types and as well as Mills & Boon under discussion, to many shrieks of laughter, we were talking Kindle and looking at our respective devices and discussing where to download, how to download etc etc. He looked quite relieved when we left.
As I said in my post of the other day Dodo Press has an amazing collection, but once downloaded I found the type size eye wateringly small and they obviously needed to be converted one way or another before reading. Julie had mentioned a software programme, Calibre, but I had forgotten the name by the time I got home and so when she read all about my difficulty she left this comment below and I am posting it here for all to see:
"Try downloading the free Calibre software at http://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows or http://sourceforge.net/projects/calibre/ and converting the pdfs to mobi format before transferring them to your Kindle"
I have taken her advice and downloaded - very easy to do and once it is up and running, very user friendly. I transferred my pdf files to the Calibre library, converted them and there they were all ready to send to my Kindle. As I also said in my post, the titles come up as text and numbers so I played around with Calibre and found if you press the Metatext button you can enter the titles and names of the authors. You can even, should you feel so inclined, change the front cover and insert a picture of your own which I might try one day just for fun.
Once it has been converted and re-titled and just as you want it - plug in your device, wait a moment or two until it has picked it up, then hit Send to Device button and lo and behold, a few minutes later, there are all your books.
I have said it before and I will say it again - technology is wonderful. But what is even more wonderful is friends who are better at it than you and are able to show you what to do.
Thank you Julie!
